Our Special Visitor, Steph!

Learning About Sembalum, Lombok!

On Friday, 2TM had a special visitor.  Steph did some work with 2TM last year.  The children (who are Year 3’s now) made some picture storybooks for the students to use in their very small library.

Steph has done lots of work with the Community Development Centre in Sembalum, which is in Indonesia.  She has spent a lot of time in Sembalum and has a passion for teaching the students and adults how to speak English.  The children and families are so happy and have beautiful smiles.

The school in Sembalum is very different to our school.  The walls are very bare and the teacher has a blackboard and chalk.  Many of the young children walk to school for many hours and they have a special mat where they sit to do their school work.  We tried to skype with them earlier this year, when Stef was in Sembalum but their internet connection is very unreliable in the village.

Steph showed us a powerpoint about life in Sembalum and we learned so much about their culture.  We made a Slideshare which tells about all the interesting things we learned from Steph.  Stay tuned as we are keen to make more picture storybooks for their library.

  1. Hi 2TM!

I was so happy to come in and speak to you all about Indonesia. Thank you for being such great listeners. I am so impressed by all of the great pictures you have drawn! My friends in Indonesia have seen them too and they think they are great as well. It’s great to see how much everyone has learnt and I can’t wait to see the storybooks. The teachers and students in Indonesia will be so happy to see how much effort you have all gone to.

I can’t wait to come in and see you all again soon.

    From Steph 🙂

  2. Hi 2TM

We are so lucky to have Steph as our very special link between the students at St Martin’s and Sembalum!

I can see from your slideshow that you were really listening to Steph and you have discovered lots of information about life in Sembalum.

I was lucky to see Steph talk to the Grade 3 classes in the LRC on Friday and she showed videos of the children when they received their books from last year’s Grade Twos…there were lots of smiles and they were so happy with their very own books! They will love your books too!

We might get some ideas for your picture books from our picture books in the LRC – what do you think?

    Happy writing and illustrating…

    Miss Y 🙂

Has anybody in 2TM visited Indonesia?
Olivia,Talei, Mollie and Erin have all been to Bali which is in Indonesia.

We wonder if you could show us your books when they are made?
