Our Pond Excursion!

Last week we had an excursion at a local pond.  It was our tuning in experience for our unit this term.  We will be learning about the Pond habitat and how the ecosystem is very important for the survival of the pond creatures.

It was a fantastic day because we actually collected water from the pond and looked at the pond creatures under the microscope.  We found some water fleas, backswimmers and bloodworms.  Sebastian was lucky to collect three bloodworms.

Mark our guide, gave us lots of information about frogs and how we need to keep our waterways clean.  He told us it is our responsibility to pick up rubbish so that it doesn’t end up in the rivers, waterways and oceans.

What do you know about the pond environment?

What action can you take to keep it healthy?

  1. Hello 2TM,
Good news! Every time I have been to the shop I have remembered to take my shopping bags. No plastic bags for me!
WOW! I read all the wonderful things you learnt on the excursion. Keep up the great work.
I look forward to seeing your amazing pond designs. It sounds so exciting.

  2. Hello 2TM
We are learning about recycling and reusing this term. We have learnt that we need to look after our environment by reducing the amount of rubbish we make. We know that plastic bags are very dangerous to our animals in ponds and in the ocean. We are glad to hear that you are learning about looking after our environment too!
Keep up the great work – you have learnt so much.

    • Dear Prep K and Mrs. Kennedy,

Thank you for leaving us a comment on our blog.

We watched your slideshow this morning.
We loved your slideshow about recycling jars. You have turned your jars into lots of interesting things.

We have also learned that if you put plastic bags in the river the turtles can get caught in the plastic bags because they think it is food.

  3. Hi Ms. Tieppo,
I liked the excursion because I learned a lot of things. What know about ponds is you need to have mud, water and plants to help it survive.

    • Hi Jasmine,

I can tell that you have already learned so much about ponds. I also learned so many new things on our excursion. Thanks for visiting our blog.

  4. Hi 2TM

It’s fantastic that you discovered so many things on your excursion!

I’m looking forward to reading about more of your learning on your blog…

See you in the new LRC very soon!

  5. Hi Ms Tieppo and 2TM

What a fabulous excursion you had to the pond!

You must have had so much fun scooping creatures out of the pond and looking at them up close under the microscope. (I’m glad nobody fell in!)

What is something you found out on the day that you didn’t know?

    Miss Y 😀

    • Dear Miss Y,
Thank you for leaving us a comment.

Morgan found out that each year a ring grows around a tree. Marc found out that if there are no plants there are no creatures. Layla found out that there are little bugs in the water. Emily found out that a worm is not a boy or a girl. Tarrant said that you can’t feed magpies human food because they get sick. Hannah saw lots of bug’s bodies in the water under the microscope. Bianca found out that the boy frogs make the croaking noises to attract the girl frogs. Jamii said that if one animal becomes extinct then other things in the food chain die too. Aidan found out that kangaroos have very good hearing.

We found out so many things.

From all of us in 2TM

  6. Hi 2TM,
Wasn’t it a wonderful excursion. It was fantastic that everyone listened to the rules outlined by Mark because no-one fell into the pond while ponding.
My favourite part was looking under the microscope and seeing in detail the creatures we caught in the pond.
I am making a big effort to remember to take my shopping bags with me to the shops so I don’t use plastic bags. Remind Mum and Dad to take bags with them when they go shopping or leave them in the car.

    • Hi Mrs. Mosbauer,

Yes it was a wonderful excursion. Thank you for leaving us a comment.

It is important not to throw plastic bags in the water because the turtles think that the plastic bag is a jellyfish and they eat it. They then get sick. Viduni reminded us that plastic bags take 25 years to break down.

      From 2TM 🙂
