Learning About Life In A Pond Habitat!

Today all the Year 2 children went to a pond habitat to learn about the creatures and how their environment is important for their survival.
We all collected mini beasts from the pond with our nets and then looked at them under a microscope. It was amazing! We saw bloodworms, backswimmers, water fleas, dragonfly nymphs and spiders.

It was so much fun making frog noises too.  Jess our guide told us that there are over 300 species of frogs.  At the Sanctuary, the rangers provide special places for frogs to hide and live.  We were very lucky to see a tiny frog.  Jess told us never to handle a frog as any chemicals or soaps on our hands can make it sick.

Take a look at what we got up to.  Have you ever been to a pond?  What did you see?

  1. Dear 2TM,

It looked like you had a great time. The pictures told me that you learnt a lot of new infomation. In hope you had a great time!

  2. Dear Ms Tieppo and 2TM,

Wow. That looked like it was a fun excursion. Where was the pond you visited? Why were you hugging the big tree?

On our excursion to Darebin Creek we also looked at water bugs. We saw back-swimmers too, as well as damselfly nymphs, water boatmen and mosquito lava.

    • Dear Ms. Elliott and 4EH,

Thank you for your lovely comment. We love answering questions.

The pond was at La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary. It was pretty and it had lots of backswimmers and bloodworms. The pond also had algae in it because of the rubbish in it.

We were hugging the tree because it was 450 years old. It was a special tree and we wanted to see how it felt.

  3. Hi Ms Tieppo and 2TM,

What a fantastic video about your day at the pond. When we watched the video about your day out it looked so similar to ours. Can you also see lots of things that are the same? I did notice one big difference though. I wonder if anyone could work out what that might be?

    Regards,
    Mrs Van and 4VL.

    • Dear Mrs. Van and 4VL,

We noticed that we both dipped into the water. We also looked for invertebrates in the water too. Lots of people in our class caught backswimmers too.
Some things that were different included us using the nets instead of bottles. Your class did an experiment but we didn’t. We thought it was cool.

We loved thinking about the questions you asked us.

  5. Hi Ms Tieppo and 2TM

What a great Pond excursion the Grade 2s had!

What did you like about using the microscopes?

At the end of your slideshow were you all hugging the tree? Imagine how old that tree must be and the the stories it could tell about how the area around it has changed over the years if it could talk!

    Miss Y 😀

    • Dear Miss Y,

Thank you for the beautiful comment. It would be good if the tree could talk. Nathan W thinks it might have other tree friends. Sebastian thinks it might say please give me a hug! Nathan S thinks that it might say I’m too old for a hug.

      From 2TM and Ms. Tieppo :}
