Art Gallery Excursion on PhotoPeach
Last Thursday our class went to the National Gallery in Federation Square in Melbourne. We have been learning about the famous Australian Heidelberg artists such as Frederick McCubbin and Tom Roberts. They used to paint in our local area of Heidelberg.
We travelled by train into the city. The Metro staff helped us to get on and off the train safely. It was so exciting being on a Metro train.
We learned so many things about art from our guides. Here are things we think are important.
- Every picture or art work tells us a story.
- An artist can use a variety of materials or mediums to create their artwork.
- You need to read the plaque next to the art work to find out about the artist and their story.
- The Indigenous artists place their canvas on the floor and they can paint their environment because they know it so well.
- You can learn a lot about history by looking at a painting.
- There is a special alarm in the Gallery to protect the paintings. You need to be one arms length away from the wall.
- The gigantic elevator is used in the gallery to move pieces of art.
- Lots of Australian art is stored away in special rooms. It is wrapped in a special tissue paper to protect the colour in the art work.

I liked going to the Art Gallery with all of you. It was lots of fun. Some of the paintings I liked were the Pioneer, Lost and the Aboriginal paintings.

Thanks for leaving a comment. I thought the Art Gallery was a great excursion too. I would have to say that the best painting for me was “The Pioneer”. I just loved the special story that it told. I could have been sitting there for hours looking at all the detail. Keep up the great commenting, Sarah!

We all agree that we want to go back to the gallery with our families because there are some really good paintings we need to see. One of our guides told us that for our Homework we needed to visit the gallery with our families. Nathan W. told us that you can go in on Saturday and Sunday and do fun activities.
When we saw the size of the paintings, some of them were very big. “The Pioneer” was really big.
Sebastian wants to know if you noticed that he got stranded in the middle of the road in the city?
What would it be like for you Miss Y if you went to the gallery?

What a wonderful excursion!
I knew that the Art Gallery had special alarms but I didn’t know you had to be an arm’s length away from them.
I really enjoy looking at art and working out the story. Some of the art you looked told the story of our Heidelberg area . When we use paintings to find information about how people lived we call them “Primary Sources”. That means we got the information directly from the person.
Were you amazed at the size of some of the paintings? Some of them are so big!
